Viterbo Italy

Viterbo is an ancient city and municipality in the Lazio region of central Italy, and the capital of the Province of Viterbo. In its early history, it conquered and absorbed the neighboring town of Ferento. It lies about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Rome’s GRA ring road along the Via Cassia, and is surrounded by the Cimini and Volsini Mountains. The historic center is enclosed by medieval walls, still intact, built during the 11th and 12th centuries, with access through ancient gates. Besides agriculture, the main resources of the Viterbo area are pottery, marble, and wood. The city hosts Italy’s gold reserves, an important Academy of Fine Arts, the University of Tuscia, and the Italian Army’s Aviation Command headquarters and training center. It is located in a broad thermal spa area that attracts many tourists from across central Italy.
